"A Shared Voyage: China-U.S. Youth Friendship Program," an educational oceanic journey that brought together 20 university students from the United States and China aboard the OceanXplorer research vessel, concluded on April 8, 2026, along Shanghai's iconic Huangpu River.
The closing ceremony was held on the deck of the OceanXplorer, with nearly 100 representatives from both countries in attendance. The program was jointly organized by OceanX, the China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF), and the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA). At the ceremony, students shared their personal experiences from the voyage, reflecting on daily life aboard the ship and insights gained from one another.
John Zhao, Chairman of CUSEF, emphasized that the essence of this voyage lies in uniting young people and fostering bilateral understanding and friendship at this critical juncture — particularly as this year commemorates the 55th anniversary of 'Ping-Pong Diplomacy'. Mr. Zhao said, “Young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow — they are the voices of today.”
Ray Dalio, Founder of OceanX and U.S. investment management firm Bridgewater Associates, expressed that bringing together young people from China and the U.S. to address ocean-related issues was a dream come true. He emphasized, "There is nothing more important to the world's health than the Chinese-American relationship."
The two-week program began on March 28 in Hong Kong, followed by visits to Ningbo and Shanghai. During the trip, the students worked together on marine science and engaged in cultural exchange activities. They also visited historical and cultural sites, high-tech enterprises, and local universities, which gave them the chance to meaningfully connect and share experiences with their peers in mainland China.
