- COP27 Climate Conference to Debate Whether Rich Nations Will Pay for Damage | The international climate talks, COP27, launched in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh against sobering data. For the first time, the topic of “funding arrangements” for loss and damage was included on the COP27 agenda, overcoming U.S. objections in favor of a bloc of the least-developed countries and emerging economies, backed by China. Efforts to come to a globally-beneficial agreement are hindered by the fact that the world’s two largest greenhouse gas emitters, the U.S. and China, are “barely speaking to each other.” On the sidelines of the Summit, French President, Emmanuel Macron, called both the U.S. and China out to step up on emissions cuts and financial aid.
