  • U.N. Issues Human Rights Report on Xinjiang | An assessment of Xinjiang's human rights situation by the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner of Human Rights (OHCHR) met with strong opposition from China. The report accused China of "serious human rights violations" and said China "may" have convicted crimes against humanity. The Chinese government declared the report "completely illegal, null and void."
  • China and U.S. Reach Audit Deal | The U.S. and China have reached a preliminary agreement that will allow U.S. accounting regulators to inspect Chinese audits in order to prevent Chinese companies from being removed from the U.S. stock exchange. Inspections will start next month of companies like Alibaba Group Holdings and JD.com. Lawyers warn that the deal is not yet complete, and there could be contention around the implementation in the future.
  • Date Set for China’s Communist Party Congress | China has set October 16th as the date for the country's 20th Communist Party Congress. At this meeting 2,300 delegates will meet to decide who will lead China for the next five years. Observers note that President Xi Jinping is anticipated to win a historic third term, making him the country's most powerful leader since Mao Zedong.
