Tsai's travel includes transits through New York and Los Angeles as part of her visit to Guatemala and Belize. Although it was initially reported that Tsai would meet with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, there has been no confirmation of this meeting. While Tsai's trip to Central America aims to strengthen ties with the region, Honduras has made its intention open to switch diplomatic relationships from Taipei to Beijing. Meanwhile, former Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou plans to visit Mainland China next week.
