  • Bills on Uyghurs | U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to sign the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act into law after the U.S. House and Senate passed the measure within 10 days. The agreement follows last week's passage of a House resolution on condemning the alleged “genocide and crimes against humanity” against Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minorities in China. The bipartisan support of both measures is the latest demonstration of the hawkish sentiment on China in Washington.
  • Xi and Putin Met Virtually | President Xi Jinping met virtually with Russian President Vladimir Putin in their second call of the year, where they discussed the countries’ common interests around energy, cybersecurity, as well as extending the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation. Russia and China are strengthening their relations around trade, energy, and security, while both countries face worsening bilateral relations with the United States.
  • China becoming a "high income" country | China's GDP per capita is expected to surpass the threshold for a "high income" country set by the World Bank. Experts caution that Beijing still has a long way to go before it can comfortably match this label, considering the living standards for most of its citizens. It is also concerned that the transition will have an impact on its status as a "developing country".
