Shanghai plans to reopen by June

Biden signs bill to support Taiwan’s participation in WHA

  • U.S. President Joe Biden signed a bill into law to support Taiwan in participating in the World Health Assembly (WHA) as an observer. The assembly under the World Health Organization has excluded Taiwan since 2017 due to China’s opposition to Taiwan’s participation after Tsai Ing-wen became the region’s leader in 2016. On Monday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry condemned the legislation, saying it “gravely violates the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués.”

North Korea reports explosive fever outbreak

  • An explosive fever outbreak in North Korea has left 1.2 million ill and over 500,000 quarantined after the country confirmed its first COVID infection on Thursday. Pyongyang has not publicly updated the numbers of COVID cases since then.
  • The outbreak was announced days after the massive military parade late last month. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un strongly criticized officials for their “irresponsible work attitude and organizing and executing ability” at Sunday’s emergency Politburo meeting. People worry the country could face a dual calamity of famine and plague.
