  • Biden's Gaffe On Taiwan? | U.S. President Joe Biden told CBS's "60 minutes" that American forces would "defend" Taiwan in conflicts with Beijing. This is the fourth time that President Biden made such a comment. However, White House officials and the President himself said afterward that the U.S. continues to uphold the "one-China" policy. While some see this as a gaffe of the 79-year-old, others say despite the declarations afterward, Biden's remarks, being the fourth iteration, are a demonstration of policy change.
  • Possible Escalation Of The Ukraine Crisis | U.S. President Biden slammed Russia at the high-level week of the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) after Russian President Putin announced a "partial mobilization," and the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia decided to hold referendums soon to decide whether to become part of the Russian Federation. The moves have injected more uncertainties into the war and could lead to an escalation of the crisis.

  • China Spending on Russian Energy Hits Record High | In August, China’s spending on Russian energy products hit a new record high at $8.3 billion, up 68% from one year earlier. China is increasing its reliance on Russian coal, with imports reaching 8.54 million tonnes last month. Experts say that while the import volume is increasing, the higher import value is also due to a global spike in energy prices as a result of the Ukraine War.
