  • China’s Role in a Ukrainian Ceasefire | On February 25, President Xi called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate with Ukraine and has offered to serve as a mediator in the conflict, despite abstaining from voting on the U.N. Security Council resolution drafted by the U.S. to end the war in Ukraine. Experts in the U.S. say China may soon feel the consequences of its close relationship with Russia as the U.S. continues to implement sanctions.
  • Biden Delivers the State of the Union Address | U.S. President Biden delivered his first State of the Union Address on Tuesday night, where he discussed Ukraine, continued COVID-19 relief, and inflation. A poll conducted by CNN found that Americans largely had a positive reaction to Biden’s speech, with 70% of people reporting their response as either “very positive” or “somewhat positive.”
  • The U.S. Sends a Delegation to Taiwan | U.S. President Biden has sent a delegation of former defense officials, led by Michael Mullen, former chair of the US joint chiefs of staff, to Taiwan. Commentators in Taiwan call this a surprise visit. The U.S. government says this visit is meant to reiterate the U.S. commitment to Taiwan.
