  • Yang and Sullivan Meet For Third Time This Year | U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and top Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi met this week to discuss Taiwan, Ukraine, and North Korea sanctions. Both countries see the meeting as candid, substantive, and constructive, agreeing that it is important to keep the communication channels open.
  • Shangri-La Dialogue | At this year’s Shangri-La Dialogue, Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe accused the U.S. of attempting to “hijack” support of Asian-Pacific countries away from China. The forum also addressed concerns over the Ukraine crisis, with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stating that the crisis in Ukraine could lead to future global turmoil. Soon after the defense conference, China enacted new rules for non-war military operations. While Chinese observers note that the framework can allow China to fend off the impacts of regional instabilities and secure supply routes, others argue the document is "in line with Beijing's Pacific ambitions."
  • U.S. Federal Reserve Approves Rate Hike | The United States Federal Reserve has approved increasing interest rates by 0.75-percentage-point, the largest rate hike in 28 years. The move is intended to offset some of the worst inflation rates the U.S. has seen in decades, but critics warn this decision could slow economic growth and further burden Americans financially.
