  • Summit for Democracy | U.S. President Biden has invited Taiwan to participate in the upcoming Summit for Democracy. Observers in the U.S. believe that despite the risk it poses to U.S.-China relations, the decision is justified. China, which was not invited to the summit, says it is "firmly opposed" to the invitation as it may be perceived as giving international legitimacy to Taiwan.
  • U.S. Innovation and Competition Act | U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has proposed the $250 billion U.S. Innovation and Competition Act. The bill has received bipartisan support in the U.S., but Chinese commentators say to expect retaliation if the bill is passed through U.S. Congress, including disruptions on imports.
  • China's Pledge to Africa | At this week's Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), President Xi promised $40 billion in investments, as well as an additional 1 billion additional COVID-19 vaccine doses to several African countries. Commentators view the strengthening relationship between China and Africa as a missed opportunity for U.S. policy and diplomacy in Africa.
