  • China Tries To Boost Economy | China reported lower-than-expected economic data for July. The authorities relaxed borrowing rules for insurers and lowered two key interest rates, and Premier Li Keqiang urged the richest provinces to "shoulder greater responsibility" to support the economy. Observers are worried that further downward pressures could lead to a recession.

  • Second Congressional Delegation Visits Taiwan | A second U.S. congressional delegation arrived in Taiwan this week. Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), who led the group, said the purpose of the trip was to encourage stability in the Taiwan Strait and reaffirm U.S. support for Taiwan. However, Chinese officials condemned the visit, viewing it "blatant violation of the one-China principle." China also conducted military patrols near the island in reaction.

  • The U.S. Holds Drills With Allies and Tests Long-Range Missile | The U.S. forces held joint Pacific Dragon drills (PD22) with four Pacific allies near Hawaii and tested an unarmed nuclear-capable long-range missile from California this week. During the DP22 drills, the U.S., Japan, and South Korea held a trilateral missile defense exercise, which was seen as targeting China and North Korea.
