China holds its ‘Two Sessions’

  • China started its first session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on Saturday (agenda: Zh/En) and started the first session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) on Sunday (agenda: Zh/En).

  • The annual meetings, known as “Two Sessions,” usually held at the beginning of March, are the occasion to review the country’s development and the government’s work in the past year and set forth a plan for the coming year. The first sessions of every five-year NPC and CPPCC are particularly important as they confirm the country’s leaders, including the president, the vice president, and the leaders of the NPC and CPPCC.

  • Premier Li Keqiang made the report on the work of the government (Zh/En; highlights: En) yesterday, setting the economic growth target at around 5% for 2023. The modest goal was set after the country’s economy expanded at 3%, falling short of the targeted 5.5%.

Biden moves close new China investment ban

  • The Biden administration is finishing an executive order to block U.S. investment in advanced technologies and other sectors of China, according to Bloomberg. The restriction will aim at projects that could impact national security.
