U.S. Sanctions Chinese Tech Businesses

  • The U.S. Department of State announced sanctions on three Chinese technology companies and their sub-units and successors over national security concerns. The Chinese Ministries of Commerce and Foreign Affairs protested against the move.

Ukraine Tensions Continue to Rise

  • The U.S. government has ordered U.S. diplomats and their families in Kyiv to leave Ukraine amid the anticipation of Russia’s invasion into Ukraine. After allowing Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to send U.S.-made weapons to Ukraine, Washington has delivered two batches of security assistance to the country in the standoff with Russia.
  • Although Secretary of State Antony Blinken rejected to impose sanctions on Russia immediately, the U.S. administration is considering further actions against Russia, including extensive export controls against Russia and sending troops to its NATO allies in Eastern Europe and the Baltic states.

European Parliament Issues Resolution on Hong Kong

  • The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Hong Kong, calling for sanctions on officials and companies and boycotting the Winter Olympics over “violation of freedom” in the city. The document encountered strong opposition from the Chinese government, the official of which called the resolution “a piece of rubbish paper.”
