Blinken to meet ‘Quad; and Pacific island leaders
- The U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Australia for “Quad” talks ahead of a video meeting with 18 Pacific island leaders in Fuji on Sunday. The trip is Washington’s latest move to enhance its presence in the Indo-Pacific region amid the Ukraine tensions and its competition with China.
U.S. trade deficit hits historic high
- The U.S. trade deficit in 2021 saw a record high at $859.1 billion, a 27 percent increase from the year before. The trade gap with China widened 14.5 percent to $355.3 billion, ending the two-year decline in deficit since 2019. As a result, U.S. President Joe Biden faces more pressure in pushing China to meet its pledge in the Phase I trade deal.
Blue paper on China’s aerospace development
- A blue paper issued by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) yesterday shows that the total weight of China’s space launch reached an all-time high in 2021. According to the document, China aims at more ambitious aerospace goals in 2022.
