Peking University’s Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), and the U.S.-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) jointly hosted the international conference titled “U.S.-China Scholarly Cooperation in an Era of Greater Geo-Strategic Tensions” in Washington, DC, between the 3rd and 5th of October. The Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, was present on the conference on the 4th, whereby he provided an overview and a range of unique insights on the present state of U.S.-China relations. Moreover, Ambassador delivered China's policy positions to nearly 30 renowned scholars from both countries.

The event marked the second phase of the project "Restoring Academic Exchanges between China and the United States: Two-Way International Conference". This conferential series was co-created by PKUSIS and CSIS, who in this extraordinarily challenging endeavor, were heavily supported by the China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF) in establishing what is the largest interpersonal exchange platform for scholars and academics at prestigious Chinese and American institutions.

Ambassador Xie Feng highly appreciate the efforts made by the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) to bring back in-person scholarly exchanges between China and the U.S.. Xie stated that, “Such exchanges have played an important role in promoting mutual understanding between our two countries. The participation and wisdom of scholars from both countries are indispensable for stabilizing and improving the bilateral relationship. We warmly welcome more”.

Furthermore, Ambassador Xie Feng was struck by the presence of numerous young faces at the symposium, which led him to express his hope that the United States would have more China experts who could strengthen their research in Chinese history and culture, deeply understand the underlying logic of China's path of peaceful development, and contribute to the improvement and development of U.S.-China relations. He expressed his expectation for more similar exchange activities in the future.

The representative of China’s most important diplomatic mission was adamant for the need to “work together to find the right way for China and the U.S. to get along in this new era, for the benefit of both countries and the world.”

In multiple instances during the conference, ambassador Xie readily exchanged his perspectives with scholars on the future direction of Sino-U.S. relations, cooperation between the two countries, Sino-U.S. academic exchanges, and Sino-U.S. interaction in the Asia-Pacific region.
