He founded Phoenix Satellite Television Company Limited in 1996, and it is now a globally renowned trans-national multimedia group and a listed company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Phoenix now operates six satellite TV channels broadcasting in Chinese and can be seen in more than 150 countries in Asia, North & South America, Europe, Africa and Australia & New Zealand and has expanded into other areas of business, including new media, outdoor LED, weekly magazine, publishing, radio broadcasting and education.
Mr. Liu graduated from the Communication University of China and was conferred an honorary doctoral degree by City University of Hong Kong. He has been appointed twice to the board of directors of Nanjing University since 2003 and is an honorary visiting professor at the Communication University of China, Nankai University, Sun Yat-sen University, Fudan University, Xiamen University and Wuhan University. Mr. Liu is the Chairman of the College International Advisory Board by the College of Business, City University of Hong Kong.
Mr. Liu was appointed a Justice of the Peace by the government of HKSAR in July 2004. On March 1, 2005, Mr. Liu was appointed Member of the Tenth National Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and was re-appointed as member of the Eleventh National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference on 25 January 2008. On March 15, 2008, he was appointed the Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee of Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports of the Eleventh National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). In July 2010, Mr. Liu was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Since 2005, Mr. Liu has been the Chairman of the iEMMYs Festival, which is run by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. In November 2008, Mr. Liu received the International Emmy® Directorate Award.
