2022-04-16

CUSEF, in collaboration with the Association of Former Members of Congress(FMC), hosted a webinar on the 14th of April 2022 to assess the meaning and durability of the One China Policy as a cornerstone for Sino-American relations.

We invited Congressman Charles Boustany (R-LA, 2005-2017) and Xie Tao, Dean and Professor of the School of International Relations and Diplomacy at Beijing Foreign Studies University, to speak on the policy that set the foundation of the Sino- US relations. Susan Thornton, Senior Fellow of Yale Law University and Director of Forum on Asia Pacific Security, moderated the discussion.

Speakers reviewed the history and the current challenges of the Sino-American relationship. In particular, all speakers highlighted the paramount importance of the One China Policy and debated whether the essence of “ One China Policy” is truly understood. Furthermore, the speakers have also identified potential opportunities and challenges for U.S.-China cooperation, such as education, trade, and climate change. The policy has proved to be successful in so many areas; it is of vital importance that the policy will continue to be observed.
