KONG (October 16, 2009) The Hong Kong-based China-United States Exchange
Foundation sponsored a visit to the United States by Professor Xu Kuangdi,
President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Former Vice Chairman of the
Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Former Mayor of
Shanghai. The recent visit was organized to allow Professor Xu to meet with
U.S. opinion leaders to present China’s commitments
and strategies in tackling climate change and in building up a low-carbon
economy for the future.
During Professor Xu’s visit to New York City, he met with Former Secretary of State
Dr. Henry Kissinger, Former Secretary of Treasury Mr. Robert Rubin, members of the Council
on Foreign Relations, the Committee of 100 and media professionals. In Washington D.C., Professor Xu met with Congressman
Adam Schiff (D-CA), Congressman David Wu (D-OR) and representatives of think
tanks. The discussions in those meetings centered on such issues as the
China-United States relationship, China’s
economic recovery in the midst of the current global
financial crisis and climate change. Professor Xu also delivered a keynote
speech at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and visited the campuses of Yale
University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), where he met
with Yale President Richard Levin and MIT President Susan Hockfield. At those occasions,
Professor Xu gave a keynote presentation highlighting China’s policies in
dealing with issues related to climate change and called for expanded technical cooperation
between China and the United States in developing a low-carbon economy in areas
such as recycling, energy conservation
and alternative energy use. Participant came away with a clear roadmap of
China’s energy initiatives and were impressed with the candid exchange and
direct manner of Professor Xu in answering the questions raised in the
discussion.
