Mr.
Tung Chee Hwa, Founding Chairman of the China-United States Exchange Foundation,
Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political
Consultative Conference and former Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, delivered a
speech at a luncheon meeting organized by the American Chamber of Commerce
today (September 15).
Mr.
Tung highlighted the considerable progress China has made in such areas as
economic development, people’s welfare and human rights during the past 60
years. As the most important bilateral relationship in the 21st
century, he commented that the Sino-U.S. relationship is moving forward and
prospering. He also pointed out that China will continue to work with the
United States and other countries on issues like climate change, environmental
protection, energy security, weapon proliferation, international terrorist
threats, global financial crisis and trade protectionism. In the ensuing
Q&A session, Mr. Tung responded to participants’ questions regarding
building bilateral trust between China and the United States, preventing the
advent of trade protectionism, Hong Kong’s future position in the Pearl River
Delta’s development, the future of China-US-Japan trilateral relationship and
China’s efforts in combating climate change.
